Epiphany traditions or 'let them eat cake"!
•Posted on January 04 2021

The French tradition of serving a frangipane filled tart known as the galette des rois on, or around the 6th January, actually dates back to the 14th century. Festivals took place around Epiphany and is a special part of the Christmas story, as it represents the twelfth day of Christmas, when the wise men visited baby Jesus. This year, the Epiphany falls on Wednesday, January 6th.
Usually there is a small fève (originally a bean or small pottery figurine) baked inside the cake and whichever lucky person gets the piece with the fève is king for the day! Of course, if they happen to bite into the fève they may be seeing their dentist soon too!
We always try to have a handful of these ceramic figurines in the shop and you can shop for them here.
